Here are some precautions a pregnant couple can take when dealing with biological hazards:

  • Talk with your healthcare provider if either of you think you may have been exposed to a biological hazard.
  • Wear special protection such as gloves and masks when contact with biological hazards is required.
  • Use good hand washing techniques before preparing food or after any contact with body secretions.
  • Talk to your doctor or midwife about tests that can screen for specific infections during pregnancy.
  • To avoid toxoplasmosis—a disease that is devastating to developing babies—and can result from exposure to raw meat or cat feces, women in industries such as meat packing, butcher shops, restaurants, green houses, florists and other similar types should take every precaution.
